MathWay and StatWay

NOT BASEBALL

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Dana Center have taken an interest in the reform of Developmental Mathematics.  This project is very much related to the New-Life project in AMATYC.  In both cases the idea is to create an intensive pathway to get students enough math to meet their career or educational goals.  The curriculum does not have to prepare every student for a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) course like Pre-calculus.  Faculty can select the course objectives most relevant for the students general mathematical literacy and for the students’ goals.  Moreover, faculty could rethink teaching methods and student services as part of the curriculum redesign.

The Dana Center/Carnegie Foundation involvement is important because now there is financial support available to pilot projects like the one AMATYC envisions.  If you would like to learn more first watch the short video below. There Treisman explains his vision in a 5 minute video.  To learn more about AMATYC’s project you could go to http://dm-live.wikispaces.com/NewLifeGuide .

  1. Thanks, Dr. Treisman, for coming to South Texas College. We are very interested in participating in the pilot studies related to the improvement of student learning, and especially the mathways!

    • It is an exciting time for Math reform. I was just reporting on the work Treisman is leading. You can contact Treisman through the Dana Center.
