BASEBALL
Before the game Fernando Rodney was catching balls in batting practice then lobbing them up just out of the reach of the fans in right center and catching them himself. I didn’t think to get his picture until after he was done. I had a lot of fun watching this game of Rodney’s. I still hope Rodney gives up three runs in the seventh or eighth. (He actually pitched a scoreless eighth.)
Justin Verlander gave up two runs in the first and two more in the second. He mostly shut down the Angels after that. Unfortunately the Tigers only managed two runs. Brennan Boesch got two hits- one of them a home run. The home run landed in the second seating section of Kaline’s Corner.
Torii Hunter had a first inning home run. In the eighth he put on a show after he was called out looking at a third strike. The home plate umpire, Kulpa, ejected him quickly. When Hunter argued that his batting helmet brim bumped Kulpa. A shouting match ensued, Soscia got ejected, Hunter had to be escorted off the field by coaches. He returned to throw an entire bag of balls on the field. It appears unlikely that Torii Hunter will hit any more home runs- or anything else for that matter- for the next few games.
The Tigers didn’t lose a game in the standings as the Twins and White Sox lost. And the fireworks show after the game was the best of the season. That’s something, right?
Hunter did in fact get a four game suspension. He is not appealing it.
